Planning Your First Visit?

Taking the step to visit a chiropractor for the first time can feel uncertain — especially if you’re not sure what to expect. This page covers everything you need to know before you arrive: what happens during your first visit, how long it takes, what to wear, how much it costs, and what a typical care plan looks like. Our goal is to make your first visit as comfortable, informative, and effective as possible.

What Happens at Your First Chiropractic Visit?

Your first appointment at Family Health Chiropractic is longer than a follow-up session — typically 45 to 60 minutes — because we take time to truly understand your health picture before we do anything else. Here is what to expect, step by step:

Step 1: Health History Intake

We start with a thorough health history form and a conversation with your chiropractor. We want to understand your current symptoms — when they started, what makes them worse or better, and how they affect your daily life. We will also ask about your medical history, any past injuries or surgeries, medications you take, and your lifestyle habits including work, exercise, and sleep.

This is not a box-ticking exercise. The more we understand about your whole health picture, the more precisely we can identify what is causing your problem and how best to help you.

Step 2: Physical and Neurological Examination

Your chiropractor will perform a systematic examination covering:

  • Postural assessment — observing how your body is aligned from the front, side, and back
  • Range of motion testing — measuring how freely your spine and joints move in each direction
  • Orthopaedic tests — specific movement tests to identify which structures are involved in your problem
  • Neurological assessment — checking reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength to assess nerve function
  • Palpation — hands-on examination of the spine to identify areas of restriction, tenderness, or abnormal muscle tension

Step 3: Explanation of Findings

Before any treatment begins, your chiropractor will explain exactly what they found, what they believe is causing your problem, and what they recommend — in plain language, without jargon. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your goals. If we find that chiropractic is not the most appropriate care for your condition, we will say so and refer you to the right specialist.

Step 4: First Treatment (if appropriate)

In most cases, we can begin gentle care at the first appointment. Your chiropractor will explain each technique before applying it, and will check in with you throughout to ensure you are comfortable. Treatment may include spinal assessment and adjustment, gentle soft tissue work, or postural guidance — depending on your specific needs.

Step 5: Care Plan and Next Steps

At the end of your first visit, your chiropractor will outline a recommended care plan — how many visits they suggest, how frequently, and what outcomes you can realistically expect. We operate on a visit-by-visit basis with no packages and no pressure. You are always in control of your care.

Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Hurt?

At Family Health Chiropractic, we use low-force, modern techniques that are gentle and comfortable for the vast majority of patients. You should not experience pain during your adjustment. Most patients describe the sensation as a gentle, targeted pressure — often followed by immediate relief of tension in the treated area.

Some patients feel mild soreness for 24–48 hours after their first adjustment, similar to the feeling after a good workout. This is a normal and temporary response as your body adapts to the changes in spinal alignment. It passes quickly and subsequent sessions are typically much more comfortable.

We do not perform the dramatic twisting or forceful manipulation sometimes seen on social media. Our adjustments are specific, controlled, and always adapted to your age, body type, and condition.

Does the Chiropractor Need to “Crack” My Back?

No. The audible “crack” or “pop” you may have seen in videos is simply the sound of gas releasing from the joint capsule — it is painless and harmless, but it is not required for effective treatment. Our chiropractors use techniques that achieve the same therapeutic effect without any twisting or popping sounds. Many patients are relieved to discover that chiropractic care can be entirely silent and still highly effective.

How Much Does a Chiropractic Visit Cost in Singapore?

Our fees are transparent, with no hidden charges or forced packages:

  • Initial consultation: Includes full health history review, physical examination, explanation of findings, and first treatment where appropriate.
  • Follow-up visits: Focused treatment sessions targeting your specific condition.
  • Paediatric and pregnancy visits: Specially adapted sessions for children and expectant mothers.

We offer discounted rates for children under 12 and seniors over 65. For a full fee breakdown, please visit our chiropractic fees page.

Chiropractic is not Medisave-claimable in Singapore, but many corporate health insurance and Integrated Shield Plans include chiropractic coverage. We can provide itemised receipts and clinical documentation to support your insurance claim.

What Should I Wear to My Chiropractic Appointment?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your chiropractor to assess your spine and posture easily. Activewear, sports shorts, or relaxed trousers work well. Avoid tight jeans, belts, and restrictive clothing. For the initial postural assessment, your chiropractor may ask you to remove your shoes and roll up your sleeves briefly.

You do not need to undress. A chiropractic consultation is conducted fully clothed in most cases.

What Should I Bring to My First Visit?

  • Any recent X-rays, MRI scans, or CT scans that are relevant to your condition (digital copies on your phone are fine)
  • A list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking
  • Your health insurance card if you plan to claim
  • If you have a referral letter from your GP or specialist, bring that too (though a referral is not required)

How Many Visits Will I Need?

This is one of the most common questions new patients ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and your goals.

For acute problems (a recent muscle strain, sudden onset neck pain), significant improvement is often seen within 3–6 visits over 2–3 weeks.

For chronic conditions (disc problems that have persisted for months, longstanding postural issues, recurring headaches), a longer care plan of 8–16 visits is more typical — with measurable improvements at each stage.

For wellness and maintenance, many patients choose to continue with periodic visits (monthly or every 6–8 weeks) to maintain spinal health and prevent recurrence once their acute issue has resolved.

Your chiropractor will give you a realistic expectation at your first visit, with clear milestones to assess progress. We review your response to care regularly and will adjust the plan if needed.

Who Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is safe and effective for patients across all age groups and life stages. At Family Health Chiropractic, we regularly care for:

  • Office workers experiencing tech neck, low back pain, or headaches from prolonged sitting
  • Pregnant women dealing with pelvic pain, low back discomfort, and round ligament pain
  • Infants and children — from newborns with latching difficulties to teenagers with scoliosis or sports injuries
  • Athletes seeking performance optimisation and faster injury recovery
  • Seniors managing age-related joint stiffness, arthritis, or reduced mobility
  • Anyone wanting a comprehensive spinal health check-up, even without acute pain

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare available for musculoskeletal conditions. Serious adverse events are extremely rare, particularly with the low-force techniques we use at Family Health Chiropractic. We take a full health history at the first visit to screen for any contraindications — medical conditions that require modified technique or where referral to another practitioner is more appropriate.

Both our chiropractors — Dr Kelvin Ng and Dr Ashley Liew — hold internationally accredited Doctors of Chiropractic degrees and are active members of the Chiropractic Association (Singapore). They maintain their clinical skills through ongoing continuing professional development.

Frequently Asked Questions About Your First Visit

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. You can book directly with us without a GP referral. However, if your GP or specialist has referred you, their clinical notes are welcome and helpful.

Can I come in if I’m in severe pain?

Yes. We see patients in acute pain regularly. Please let us know at the time of booking so we can allocate sufficient time and ensure our chiropractor is prepared for your specific needs. In some severe cases, we may recommend rest, ice, or GP review before beginning hands-on treatment.

Can I bring a family member or friend?

Absolutely. You are welcome to bring a support person to your first appointment. For children, we encourage a parent to remain present throughout the consultation and treatment.

What if chiropractic is not right for me?

We will tell you. Our chiropractors are trained to identify when chiropractic is not the most appropriate care and will refer you to the right professional — whether that is your GP, an orthopaedic surgeon, a physiotherapist, or another specialist. Your health comes first, always.

How do I book my first appointment?

You can book online via our appointment booking page, or call or WhatsApp our clinic directly. We typically have appointments available within 1–3 business days. Same-week appointments are often available for urgent cases.
